A festive twist to Elon Musk’s weight loss journey once more has captured the internet’s attention. Earlier this month, Elon Musk bragged in a social media post that he takes the weight loss drug Mounjaro and playfully references himself as ‘Ozempic Santa.’ In a classic red-and-white Santa skirt suit uniform with a long white beard, Musk stood at a Christmas tree in the post that went viral quickly.
The photo read “Ozempic Santa,” Musk clarified in the comments to the photo, that she uses Mounjaro, the name Musk attached to the photo, not Ozempic, but chose Ozempic because it was catchier. Like Cocaine Bear but with Santa and Ozempic! It’s technically Mounjaro, but that doesn’t have that ring to it,” he said.
And on the heels of some big medical news, this is a lighthearted revelation. Mounjraro — rebranded as Zepbound — was approved by the FDA in November 2023 as a weight management drug for people who are overweight or obese. Musk has been vocal about the utility of GLP-1 receptor agonists like Mounjaro and is well known for his advocacy of medical innovation. Similarly, making these drugs more affordable could have a dramatic positive impact on health, lifespan, and quality of life for Americans, he has said, more than other health measures.
A flurry of reactions reacted to the post from Musk’s followers. Indian-origin tech entrepreneur CEO Perplexity AI Aravind Srinivas felt that guys you have lost a lot of weight. Yet another user who found Musk limited when it comes to Christmas decorations and apparel took a jab at a pharmacist’s perspective, calling Mounjaro’s dual action receptor mechanism different from Ozempic. Not all responses, though, were celebratory: One user implored Musk to reconsider traditional weight loss methods and warned against taking weight loss medications.
Musk followed that post with a story about his childhood when he was dressed as Santa, and the phone number written on the white bag he was holding was ais real one, as he stood on a serene tree-lined road. The caption, “How it started vs how it’s going,” compared the caring innocent features of his younger self to the bolder, meme-worthy individual of today.
Musk’s openness about how he used Mounjaro speaks to innovation and his use of lighthearted humor in discussing personal milestones about health has generated conversations continuing beyond the weight loss aspect. His “Ozempic Santa” post is a larger conversation starter for the future of weight management and healthcare accessibility that will become a populous conversation starter in the coming years as the demand for these GLP1 drugs continues to grow and Musk will continue to shape the public conversation.
