The end of the year was marked by India preparing for a new kind of internet connectivity as plans are set over satellite internet services. It’s heating up with major players like Jio, Airtel, Vodafone-Idea, Starlink (Elon Musk’s venture), and Amazon Kuiper fighting for a slice of the satellite internet market. And to make this vision a reality, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is at the helm, ensuring the right frequency spectrum gets allocated smoothly.
Spectrum Allocation: The Key to Satellite Internet
Specifying the details of spectrum allocation is a concern close to the helm of telecom providers and stakeholders, and it is being worked upon by the Telegraph Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). This is a vital step because the frequency spectrum is the spine of satellite internet services. For example, companies such as Jio and Airtel have expressed their interest in the bidding-based process of allocation, but the government is thinking of a simpler and more direct approach.
The DoT has asked TRAI to come up with its recommendations on spectrum allocation by December 15. The process is expected to be approved by the Cabinet in the last week of this month before spectrum distribution could begin.
Starlink: Poised for Launch
Elon Musk’s Starlink is receiving the most buzz out of the competitors. Starlink has applied to be able to provide internet across satellite in India since October 2022, now they are waiting on official approval. We have been diligent in the course of fulfilling all government requirements, the company has confirmed.
Jio and Airtel have already completed the required permissions to enter the satellite internet services business but more are still in the process of getting permissions for their satellite internet services, namely, Starlink and Amazon Kuiper. However, the readiness and dedication of Starlink make it seem likely that you’ll soon see it being a major player in India’s satellite internet field too..
BSNL Enters the Digital Race
In its own parallel, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has developed India’s first Internet Fiber TV (IFTV) service. The product delivers fiber-based internet and television services in one integrated digital experience framework. BSNL’s IFTV service—which was first rolled out in Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu—has now expanded to Punjab. This unique service is being delivered through the state-run telecom company jointly with Skypro.
What This Means for India
Satellite internet services are poised to revolutionize India’s digital infrastructure. They deliver high-speed, dependable internet connectivity in remote and underserved places to bridge the digital gap. Global titans—Starlink nationally and Jio and Airtel at home—are working together to bring India to the precipice as a satellite internet technology leader.
And as we edge ever closer to the new year, digital connectivity is set to make a big leap. The successful rollout of satellite internet will enable millions of Indians and boost India’s position in the global technology arena.
